Ilise S. Carter is a freelance writer based in New York City. She’s the author of two nonfiction books on women in American history: The Red Menace: How Lipstick Changed the Face of American History (Prometheus Books 2021) and When We Spoke to the Dead: How Ghosts Gave American Women Their Voice (Sourcebooks 2025), which were both praised by Publishers Weekly. As a journalist she has written for Allure, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others; and has spent over a decade as a consulting copywriter for companies including Shiseido, bliss, and L’Oreal.
