BROOKLYN, NY— Tuesday, August 9, 2016—The Brooklyn Book Festival (BKBF) and Brooklyn Book Festival Literary Council continue to add acclaimed and best-selling authors to its sparkling line-up of national and international authors slated to take part in the Brooklyn Book Festival, NYC’s and the nation’s hippest event celebrating the written word. The festival welcomes back AT&T as its major sponsor.
The city’s largest free literary festival, the Brooklyn Book Festival is one of the country’s premier international book festivals, drawing tens of thousands each year to the global creative capital of Brooklyn, NYC. The 7-day festival launches with a week of city-wide Bookend Events, a Children’s Day celebrating childhood literature and finally Festival Day — a day-long literary extravaganza with more than 100 panel discussions and reading on 12-stages and a vibrant outdoor Literary Marketplace.

EVENTS/DATES:

STARTING MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th, A CELEBRATORY WEEK OF LITERARY PROGRAMS!
Kicking off the Brooklyn Book Festival week on September 12th are seven days of BKBF Bookend events, literary-themed activities taking place in clubs, parks, bookstores, theatres and libraries throughout the city.Bookends launch the full literary week with parties, literary games and author appearances and other unique events. The schedule of more than forty Bookends will include Okey Ndibe, Ann Patchett, Patti Smith, R.L. Stine, Elliott Sharp and Steve Buscemi.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th – CHILDREN’S DAY

This year, BKBF again hosts its popular Children’s Day, a full day of literary activities targeting young book lovers, on September 17th, from 10AM-4PM (for children ages 2 to 11). Children’s Day is a free day-long celebration of books and authors for children, families, guardians, and educators. Picture Book Stage authors of new and favorite titles including Rebecca Stead(Goodbye Stranger), Ruth Chan (Amy the Red Panda is Writing the Best Story in the World), Raúl Colón(cover, Angela and the Baby Jesus) Christian Robinson (Last Stop on Market Street), Mike Curato (Little Eliot),Julia Sarcone-Roach (The Bear Ate Your Sandwich), Vanessa Brantley Newton and Brendan Wenzel (They All Saw a Cat). Authors engage younger children through singing and stories to bring the spirit of the books alive. At the Young Reader’s Stage, children hear authors read and discuss their books, and topics such as the inspiration behind writing fantasy, friendship and adventure stories, and how they became a writer. Beloved authors on stage that day include Soman Chainani (The School for Good and Evil), Rita Williams-Garcia (Gone Crazy in Alabama), Adam Gidwitz (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back: So You Want to Be a Jedi?), Reyna Grande (The Distance Between Us), and many more! For children who seek an interactive learning experience, the festival presents workshops with topics ranging from bookmaking and STEM to reading maps and writing stories, and an “ARTSPOT” where children create projects with authors. At a competitive illustrator draw-off, illustrators create original drawings in response to prompts from the children in audience; the theatre group TADA will perform adaptations of books by Ezra Jack Keats. Get ready, set, draw! Illustrators participate in a dueling draw-off not to be missed! Books by participating authors and other new and beloved children’s books will be on sale on BKBF Children’s Day with author book-signings after each program.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th – FESTIVAL DAY

The weeklong celebration of the written word culminates with the flagship, fourteen-stage Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, September 18th. Panel discussions and readings fill the day and 300 authors—including authors from nearly 20 countries — read, discuss and sign their books. 300 authors of beloved works of fiction (Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, Libba Bray, Stephanie Danler, Nicole Dennis-Benn, Joyce Carol Oates, Yoss, Gayle Forman, Jacqueline Woodson, Angela Flournoy, Esmeralda Santiago Karin Slaughter), non-fiction (Thomas Frank, Ed Jong, Jessica Valenti, Ralph Nader, Bruce Schneier, A.O. Scott, Hua Hsu, Rebecca Traister, Margo Jefferson, Pete Hamill, Helen Garner), graphics (Faith Erin Hicks, Phoebe Gloeckner, Chester Brown, Marjorie Liu), poetry (Yusef Kumunyakaa, Ocean Vuong, and Monica Youn) and young adult authors (Cecily von Ziegesar, George O’Connor, Marina Budhos, Daniel José Older, Libba Bray, Jesse Andrews, Anna Breslaw) participate in panels, readings and other creative performances of their work. Outdoors at the Festival’s famed Literary Marketplace, more than 200 booksellers and publishers create a vibrant literary celebration with books and literary magazines from all over the country. On Festival Day the center of the literary universe is truly Brooklyn!
