Place, from the city and neighborhood to the personal space we call home, informs our identity and this proximity affects the way we perceive ourselves and others. Giada Scodellaro’s Ruins, Child follows a group of six Black women tending to each other in a derelict apartment building in a deteriorating urban environment while their daily lives are being broadcast, allowing their neighbors—and each other—to monitor and judge them. In Karan Mahajan’s The Complex, the descendants of one of India’s political architects live in the same dilapidated apartment building as they compete for influence and power as well as for more space and better rooms. Bindu Bansinath’s Men Like Ours follows a South Asian community in New Jersey, where the death of a family friend brings the women of Willow Road together in a police investigation, delivering intel in the form of neighborhood gossip and snippy comments.
