Graphic novels excel at bringing human history to visual life, but there’s much more to the process than simply picturing the past. Glynnis Fawkes (1177 B.C.: A Graphic History of the Year Civilization Collapsed) puts on her archaeologist’s hat to adapt Eric Cline’s award-winning book; John Vasquez Mejias expands his parents’ stories of a 1950 insurrection to create the fully woodcut epic of The Puerto Rican War: A Graphic History, and Lin King’s feat of translating one man’s epic biography from three languages – Taiwanese, Japanese and Mandarin – brings us into the full sweep of Taiwan’s history (The Boy from Clearwater).
