Ross Young writes about the afterlife because the living one didn’t come with enough jokes. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne—in a hospital since demolished, which he takes as an omen—he spent a peripatetic childhood scattered across international postings, an experience he now deploys badly in the pursuit of seeming windswept and interesting. When not diving or travelling to places with questionable Wi-Fi, he writes the Gloomwood novels: darkly comic mysteries set in the Grim Reaper’s own corner of the afterlife, where Detective Blunt solves crimes nobody asked him to. Despite the material, Young remains stubbornly, disappointingly alive. Four books in, he shows no signs of stopping.
