Maureen Mahon, a cultural anthropologist, is an associate professor in the Department of Music at New York University. She is the author of Right To Rock: The Black Rock Coalition and the Cultural Politics of Race (Duke University Press, 2004), and articles on music and African-American cultural studies. She was the Chief Academic Advisor for the concert series “Soundtrack of America,” a Steve McQueen commission for the April 2019 opening of The Shed. Her new book, Black Diamond Queens: African American Women and Rock and Roll, is forthcoming from Duke University Press.
